U.K. pop music
countdown show Top of the Pops has suffered another blow.
Since the show moved from its Friday night slot on BBC1 to Sunday
on BBC2, ratings numbers have been cut in half. Now, the show is
facing controversy after one of its presenters made a derogatory
comment about the weight of one of its showcased bands. Richard
Bacon introduced the "The Magic Numbers" with the line: "What do
you get when you put two brothers and two sisters in a band? A big
fat melting pot." The band was so offended, they stormed out of
the studio and refused to perform. [This is London]

Foreign TV
channels are not feeling very welcome in China at the moment. Regulators
have announced plans to forbid any new foreign-owned TV channels
from entering the country. The rules are meant to aid the country
in regulating its TV content. Disney is expected to suffer most
from the ban, as it is one of the few major media companies without
a channel in the market. In 2003, the company applied for a limited
broadcasting license. But now, the possibility of that being granted
seems impossible. [Xinhua Online]

Moviegoers
in Japan are experiencing the ride of their lives every time they
visit the movie theater. The United Cinema Kishiwada theater chain
in Kishiwada, Japan, has installed vibrating seats into its theaters.
Four "vibro-transducer" devices are installed in the back and bottom
of each seat. The devices convert all sounds of a certain audio
frequency into motions that rock the viewer back and forth and side
to side. [Herald Tribune/Asahi]

The Walt Disney Company's board of directors received a mere slap
on the wrist for granting Michael Ovitz a $140 million severance
package after 14 months of work. Chancellor William B. Chandler
II, a Delaware judge, reprimanded the directors, saying they fell
short of the highest standards of board conduct; but ultimately,
he ruled they were within their rights to send Ovitz away with the
massive compensation. [The New York Times]
