BUSINESS
New business ventures have served Comcast well. The world's largest cable company saw its second quarter profits jump by 64 percent. Demand for digital television and high-speed Internet services helped the company earn $430 million, or 19 cents a share, in the quarter that ended June 30. Some 284,000 digital television subscribers were added in the quarter, with 43 percent of its customers now having digital services. At the same time, however, Comcast lost 77,000 basic cable customers, about twice what analysts had expected. [The New York Times]

ADVERTISING
Blame the prevalence of DVRs, or viewers' increased tendency to flip channels, but it seems as though advertisements are becoming a larger part of TV content. Ofcom, the U.K.'s TV watchdog, has fined Channel 4 for an episode of talk show Richard and Judy, which they insist gave undue prominence to the Red Bull energy drink. Ofcom said that multiple references to the drink "gave the distinct impression that the programme had come under external commercial influence". The July 19 item featured visual references to the drink, and contributors recommended Red Bull four times. [Manchester Evening News]

TECHNOLOGY
They say love knows no bounds, and now one Chinese Media Group is testing out that age-old adage. Beijing's Le-TV Media Group Corp. has created a modern-day love story for mobile phones. The series, Appointment, will comprise of five-minute episodes. But the series can only be viewed on sophisticated phones with Internet connections made by South Korea's LG Electronics -- one of the sponsors of the series. [Associated Press]

Watch out TV manufacturers! The small screen is getting some serious competition for viewer eyeballs. Big media and Internet companies are developing more and more Web-based video programming, which allows viewers to watch their favorite programs on their computer screens -- combining the interactivity and immediacy of the Web with the engagement of television. Recognizing that young kids are spending more time in front of their computer screens, Nickelodeon has created TurboNick, a free Internet service that offers 24-hour access to popular programs and some original programs, too. MTV's new Internet video service, MTV Overdrive, allows users to view dozens of shows -- music video collections, newscasts, artist interviews and supplements to MTV's signature programs. Internet-based broadcasting might be in the brink of getting a big boost in Japan. The country plans to test live-broadcast of terrestrial digital television programs on the Internet via fiber-optic cable networks starting this fall. If successful, the service will be introduced in 2006. Analog broadcasting is expected to terminate completely in Japan by 2011, and this re-broadcasting service would particularly benefit TV viewers living in areas that cannot be reached by the terrestrial digital TV signals that will the replace analog signals. An LCD screen, which can display two images at the same time, has been developed by Sharp. This way, a viewer can watch his or her favorite program, while someone else in the house can surf the Internet using the same screen, but simply sitting at a different angle. The technology consists of a conventional LCD screen overlaid with a series of alternating opaque and transparent strips, called a parallex barrier. The display can also allow a driver to view a navigation screen, while the front seat passenger can watch a DVD from the same screen. [New Scientist]

CONTROVERSY
In a turn of events that resembles an episode of 1980s soap opera Dynasty, Rupert Murdoch's son, Lachlan, has resigned from his post at media conglomerate News Corp, reportedly because he was tired of his father's meddling. People close to both father and son have also acknowledged that tensions over the trust were a factor, and that those tensions stem from the conflicting maternal ambitions of Murdoch's ex-wife (who is also Lachlan's mother) and his current wife, with whom he has two children. ABC-TV is getting the cold shoulder from Russia's Foreign Ministry. Peeved at the network for airing a Nightline interview with Shamil Basayev, a notorious Chechen warlord, the ministry has vowed not to renew permission for ABC-TV to operate in the country. ABC representatives have said they hope the country will reconsider, but stressed that their mission as a members of the free press is to cover news events (even illegal acts) in order to help audiences better understand important issues. FILM
What is essentially a very bad thing for the movie theater industry is turning out to be pretty good for moviegoers in Australia. As a result of the increased popularity of DVDs and the surge in DVD piracy, Village Cinemas and Hoyts Cinemas have announced discounted box office ticket prices for the weekend. Both chains will charge $8.50 for all sessions from today until Sunday -- about OZ$6 less than the normal weekend ticket price. The country's other major cinema chain, Greater Union, has capped ticket prices at $10 for the month of August. [The Australian]
